Huggy Bear discography.

Huggy Bear was an English, co-ed, riot grrl band in the early nineties. They put out two records of which I am aware, and they're both pleasant (insofar as grinding punk music with screechy but passionate vocals can be pleasant) and well-done.

Taking the Rough With the Smooch (1993)

Weaponry Listens to Love (1994)

Go Sailor - Self-Titled (1996)

Go Sailor was a really adorable twee pop band that tragically only released one album before their creative demise. I found them through a compilation CD I bought in the seventh or eighth grade, Boys Lie, which I will probably put here at some point soonish. This whole album is really listenable and sweet.

Earth - The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull (2008)

Dark, lovely, melodic and perfect drone.

Sigur Rós - Live at the Southside Festival in Germany (2008).

I was fortunate enough to have seen Sigur Rós twice this year, though only the latter occasion was worth mentioning. The first wasn't as great not because they didn't sound as stunning and mind-numbingly beautiful as they usually do; rather, it was because I was sitting in a field at 2am with a bunch of hippies waiting for my acid to kick in. In fact, the only highlight of that show was when two members signed my copy of their new album before the show that night, which is not to say I'm at all disappointed about that. However, I saw them a second time in September at a proper venue, an old church that puts on shows during the week, in NYC, which was purely sublime. Here is a live cut from a festival they played in Germany.

1. Svefn-g-englar
2. Ný Batterí

4. Við Spilum Endalaust

America - "The Last Unicorn" OST (1982)

I watched The Last Unicorn when I was home on winter break from my first semester at college, no joke, and I was still enchanted. It's a cute movie that actually isn't all that annoying and hard to watch compared to most other kids' movies, especially considering that this one is quite old. America does the soundtrack, which is surprisingly.. addicting. Um.

The Streets - Everything Is Borrowed (2008)

As a long time fan of The Streets, I was really anxious about this record because so many of my loved artists are putting out crap these days. However, Mike Skinner did not disappoint me even a little bit with this one; in fact, I don't think there are even songs I don't like, which never, ever happens. In short, this is a really solid release by the English MC who taught me about birds and geezers. Thanks, Mike.

Cat Power - Jukebox (2008)

Here is the newest record from Southern, blues-y, poetic and Faulknerian Chan Marshall, who is fantastic at worst. I have been in love with this woman's music for so, so long. This one isn't too bad either. Regrettably, I missed her at Bonnaroo, which was a shame for sure, but when I saw her in October of 2007 she was GREAT. Her music hits a special spot for me.

They Shoot Horses Don't They - Boo Hoo Hoo Boo (2006)

This is a really odd record of layered noises and quirky interjections. It's like a weird, colourful dream carnival in your brain!

Tobacco - Fucked Up Friends (2008)

This is the side project of one of the guys in Black Moth Super Rainbow, who I adore for being the epitome of one of the sounds I like best at this point. It was pitched to me as his 'hip hop' project, but that is probably due at least in part to the fact that Aesop Rock makes an appearance on one of his songs. Otherwise, I'd say that, though the beats are a little fatter (not "phat", okay, "fat"), there's not much hip hop involved on this record. Instead, it's reminiscent of BMSR, but this is not the same as one of their releases.

Roxy Music - BBC Sessions (1972/1973)

Here is some (more) live music by my all time favourite band!!! Aside from Viva!, which is available here a few pages back, this is about the closest I'll ever come to seeing Roxy Music live. I'd like to find a hard copy of this somewhere, but I haven't been able to locate one yet. Then again, maybe I'm not trying hard enough.

The Pop Group - Y (1979)

This group is among my favourite aural challenges, oh man. A man named John Dougan described this particular album much better than I could via All Music Guide & Amazon:

"Emerging in the late-'70s post-punk era, this militant gang of leftist radical politicos from Bristol, England, specialized in a funk-driven cacophony of sound that was abrasive, strident, and ultimately very exciting. Railing against Margaret Thatcher's Tory government, the state of pop music, racism, sexism, etc., the Pop Group were not the easiest band of the early post-punk era to listen to, but those who made the effort were in for an interesting melange of primitive rhythms and avant-garde guitar racket." (Dougan 2008)

And there you have it.

Two Magazine albums.

Magazine was a post-punk group made up of some ex-members of The Buzzcocks. Here are two of the five cuts they released before their disbandment in 1981.

Real Life (1978)

The Correct Use of Soap (1980)

Los Abandoned - Mix Tape (2006)

This is the most delightful pop punk to have ever infiltrated my ears. I'm not normally a fan of this kind of thing, but this group is too cute, seriously.

Slowdive: Live at Reading: 26 February 1991

Slowdive was an English dream pop band that formed in 1989 and lasted until 1995. Their music is really soft, slow and melodic in addition to being conducive to the perfect, hazy nostalgia of which I am so overly fond. They sound like 90's England, or so I would imagine.

1. Shine
2. Catch
3. Slowdive
4. Morning Rise
5. Colours In Spin
6. She Calls
7. Avalyn

Antony & The Johnsons - Another World EP (2008)

I know I'm a little late on this, but this is just too awesome not to post. Antony Hegarty is a god(dess) among men, and his newest mini-release is purely indicative of his talents as an artist. I saw him live last month at the Apollo Theatre in NYC, and it blew my mind. If you don't know him, his style is best described a modern freak opera- very worthwhile, I promise. Track #3, "Shake That Devil", is the classiest dance party that will ever happen to you (and great for a drag performance).
