Paula Cole - This Fire (1996)

To dismiss anything about this record would be a very serious mistake on your part, dear (non-)reader of this blog. It will tear you a new asshole and stitch it right back up by the end. Just because that last track was on Dawsons Creek in the 90's does not lessen its impact on the record as a whole, and just because Paula Cole was one of a handful of lady artists to come out and make music in the 90's does not lessen the importance of this album as both serious and seriously awesome. I rediscovered this record, which was much more meaningful to me now than it was when I was 8 and got it in my Easter basket (hahaha). Give it a go; if you're in touch with any part of your human emotional capacity, you won't be disappointed.

Two PJ Harvey albums.

I cannot seem to put the following two albums down; maybe it's this weather. The first one, Dry, is a really raw, dark, obsessive Polly that I adore so much. The second is more beat-y, almost electronic in feeling. Also dark, it's on par with Tori Amos' From The Choirgirl Hotel, if that helps at all. Though they're labeled both 90's and 'alternative', do not mistake these for some lame rock-alternative crap from that era. These two are seriously excellent (and seriously addictive as of late).

90's alternative mix.

This mix is all about the nineties alternative, mostly in celebration of the days when radio was tolerable, nay, enjoyable to me. It's certainly been a while. This is such a fun mix, and though I think some of these songs probably came out in the late 80's, they're still what I remember listening to during the 90's, which ruled.

Two Ozric Tentacles albums.

Ozric Tentacles were a psychedelic band formed in 1970's England, but not in the same sense that Pink Floyd was 'psychedelic'. Indeed, I think this group pinned down the mind-bending aspect of the word moreso than Pink Floyd, who seemed more conceptual, much more lyrically abstract than musically. There are words to these songs, which, in my opinion, makes them closer to ideal, and if you're doing any kind of hallucinogenic drugs (or even just smoking weed), this is probably a nice addition to your experience. Ahem. Here are two of their more recent cuts.

My two favourite Saves The Day albums.

Awww, Saves The Day saved my day all the time when I was thirteen, oh man. I will always love these two CD's, not only because of their nostalgic appeal, but also because they're what I suppose is technically "emo" at their best, or at least, they're the only band in that genre that I've ever really enjoyed. I don't know that they're in the pop punk genre, which is kind of a shame because that carries much less stigma than 'emo'. OH WELL. ENJOY.

少年ナイフ - Brand New Knife (1997)

Shonen Knife is a Japanese girl group whose music is reminiscent of 60's pop, very light, sunny and catchy. (They might also kind of qualify as twee pop, to explain that tag.) I've recently made their acquaintance, so I thought it would be nice to make their music available to others (as with everything else posted here). They're just so damn cute; I can hardly even stand it.

Brand New Knife (1997)

Pure Moods, Volume 1 (1997)

This is kind of ridiculous, yes, but it's also being posted for the sake of fun, ridiculous nostalgia. The tenth track used to generate in me this vision of a town getting together to run leaping and bounding across this massive, bright green and well-lit field.. to eventually dive into this mass of mysteriously misplaced cake. I can't really explain it, but keep it in mind while listening.

Swans - Cop / Young God (1993)

Really brutal, heavy music made by a few individuals that I understand to have been pretty influential to later industrial music. This record is slightly difficult, definitely not for everyone.

Pi Soundtrack (1998)

This soundtrack is as dark, crunchy and artistically gnarled as the movie for which it was compiled.

Burning London: A Tribute to The Clash (1999)

I am so stuck on this CD right now. It's a compilation of Clash covers, some of which are genuinely golden. For example, my personal favourite is Ice Cube covering "Should I Stay Or Should I Go"-- WHAT. BRILLIANT. Third Eye Blind has also contributed a nice version of "Train In Vain", which happens to be my favourite song The Clash did.

1. "Hateful" by No Doubt
2. "This Is Radio Clash" by The Urge
3. "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" by Ice Cube
4. "Cheat" by Rancid
5. "Train In Vain" by Third Eye Blind
6. "Clampdown" by Indigo Girls
7. "Rudie Can't Fail" by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
8. "(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais" by 311
9. "Lost In The Supermarket" by The Afghan Whigs
10. "White Riot" by Cracker
11. "London's Burning" by Silverchair
12. "Straight To Hell" by Moby & Heather Nova

Jamiroquai discography.

Though I found this band far too late, I'm really just thankful that I did at all. Their cosmic disco funk is, in my opinion, one of the finest things to have arrived in my ears so far in my life. I'm not even kidding; they are definitely one of my favourite bands. Here are all their studio albums!

Huggy Bear discography.

Huggy Bear was an English, co-ed, riot grrl band in the early nineties. They put out two records of which I am aware, and they're both pleasant (insofar as grinding punk music with screechy but passionate vocals can be pleasant) and well-done.

Taking the Rough With the Smooch (1993)

Weaponry Listens to Love (1994)

Go Sailor - Self-Titled (1996)

Go Sailor was a really adorable twee pop band that tragically only released one album before their creative demise. I found them through a compilation CD I bought in the seventh or eighth grade, Boys Lie, which I will probably put here at some point soonish. This whole album is really listenable and sweet.

Slowdive: Live at Reading: 26 February 1991

Slowdive was an English dream pop band that formed in 1989 and lasted until 1995. Their music is really soft, slow and melodic in addition to being conducive to the perfect, hazy nostalgia of which I am so overly fond. They sound like 90's England, or so I would imagine.

1. Shine
2. Catch
3. Slowdive
4. Morning Rise
5. Colours In Spin
6. She Calls
7. Avalyn

New Radicals - Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too (1998)

Gregg Alexander, the man behind New Radicals, is a reclusive genius who never played live shows or did interviews even though he got a bunch of musicians together and put out this absolutely immaculate record. This was one of my favourite albums of the nineties, and I'm posting it so everyone can have access.

Julie Ruin - Self-Titled (1998)

This is what Kathleen Hanna was doing in between the breakup of Bikini Kill and the start-up of Le Tigre, which, in fact, was initially formed as a backup band for Julie Ruin. Written and recorded in her apartment with some samplers and a broken drum machine, this record is definitely of the DIY mixtape variety; however, what it lacks in production value it more than makes up for in articulate, intelligent lyrics spanning topics from police brutality to the widespread-vapidity in the punk scene. It's one of my favourite albums evar because it's so genuine and smart; it has all the crunchy, self-responsible makings of the good punk records for which Kathleen was responsible in her Bikini Kill days, but it's much more pointed, more mature.

Live Isis cuts.

Isis is a really special band, one that's successfully fused, if not totally transcended, a few of my favourite genres to create this really spectacular, intensely brainy breed of spaced-out, progressive metal. The following are bundles of some live sets, presumably from separate performances at various times. (I don't remember where I found these, so if you come across them and realize they're yours, let me know.)

Live One
1. Carry
2. Hymn
3. Weight
4. The Beginning of the End

Live Two
1. From Sinking
2. Glisten
3. Carry
4. Weight
5. The Beginning of the End
6. Celestial Ext [altered version]

Live Four
1. Gentle Time
2. Glisten
3. CFT
4. Celestial
5. Improv 1
6. False Light
7. Weight

Live Bundle #3 wouldn't upload for some reason, but I'm working on it.
