Metallic Falcons - Desert Donuts (2006)

Metallic Falcons is Matteah Baim and Sierra Casady of CocoRosie fame. Sierra was the reason I was made aware of this record, which is strange and beautiful in a way that amplifies those qualities in CocoRosie's music without overdoing it. The best way I can think to put it is this: it sounds like a memory, most likely one to take place in a quiet house on a cloudy day. I've seen it classified as "baby metal" by lots of folks, but what that means I'm not really sure; there's nothing about this album that I would say is even remotely metal, but it is creepy and dark like I guess some metal is? Difficult to describe, it's not difficult to enjoy; I recommend this if you like CocoRosie or just spooky music in general.

Tom Gabel - Heart Burns EP (2008)

This is the solo record of Tom Gabel, the front man in Against Me!. I love them, so naturally I was excited for this to come out. My initial assessment is that is is glorious! I love it, seriously. I thought it was going to be some soft, silly, too-dance-y record, but I actually think it's reminiscent of older AM!, emotional and raw. Overall, I recommend this highly.

The Gossip - Undead In NYC (2003)

The live Gossip album! The Gossip is a punky band out of Arkansas, probably most known for its lead singer, Beth Ditto, who is just fantastic. They're really awesome.

Rage Against The Machine - Live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium (2003)

If you never got to see Rage live in their prime as I never got to see Rage live in their prime, this is a nice, cheap alternative to one of the giant, stupid festivals they've reunited to play as of late. I highly recommend this.

Rasputina - A Radical Recital (2005)

This is the live recording by one of the creepiest bands I've experienced so far; the best part about them is not the unique stage presence concocted by two cellos and a drum set, not Melora Creager's wry humour or even their subject matters, many of which are products of having raided the Library of Congress; rather, it's that they actually do sound this good live.

Air - The Virgin Suicides Original Motion Picture Score (2000)

I loved both the book & movie, The Virgin Suicides, so I had to give this score a shot. Luckily, it's swell; if you aren't familiar with Air, they're a French electronic duo who puts out these ambient, quasi-atmospheric and always-lovely soundscapes. Apparently Sophia Coppola was such a fan of theirs that she personally asked them to this for her film. My favourite track on this release is #6; it's actually a lot like a hurricane. There will likely be more of their work posted in the future.

Fuck Buttons - Street Horrrsing (2008)

Though they've only got one record to their name at the moment, I love this band dearly. Their sound is reminiscent of all the bands in the the creepy, dark underbelly of the 1970's that produced so much of my favourite music, only their sound is a little more aggressive, crunchier. I saw them live the other night, and it blew my head off. (They upstaged Mogwai hardcore, in my opinion.)

Balkan Beat Box - Self-Titled (2005)

This exceptional duo is one of the guys who used to be in Gogol Bordello and a DJ. It's kind of like Gogol Bordello in that it's fun and East European, but this is a fabulous dance record like no other, oh boy.
